Keep a High Feedback Score and DSRs on eBay

Feedback is eBay's rating system and shows your reputation as an eBay member. DSRs (Detailed Seller Ratings) are more detailed information about your service and products based on the buyer's experience. The DSR ratings are left anonymously by buyers, so that buyers can accurately describe their experience with you though a non-threatening system. DSRs give sellers more insight into how customers perceive their service and products.

Learn what steps to take to keep your DSRs as high as possible. If your DSRs get too low, your items appear at the bottom of searches and you can also lose seller privileges.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • eBay Account
  • Internet Connection
  • Time
  1. Step 1

Always describe your item accurately, honestly, and completely. Your buyer will have the item in his hands in a few days, so there is no sense in trying to hide any flaws. Describe any flaws and be honest.

  2. Step 2

Show multiple views of the item on your photos, and point out any flaws or damages. Your item may still sell if it is not perfect. The key is to give buyers full disclosure.

  3. Step 3

Fully explain the terms of sale, return policy, shipping timeline, and any other pertinent information. Make sure all of your policies are clear to prevent any misunderstandings.

  4. Step 4

Always include a shipping calculator. If you add handling charges, explain why. Customers don't like to feel like they have been ripped off, even if they haven't. Justification for shipping and handling charges include situations like fragile or large items that require extra packing material and labor, very heavy items that require extra labor in packing, etc.

  5. Step 5

Always answer questions as soon as possible, on the same day if you can. Customers don't want to feel ignored or unimportant. Without your customers, you have no sales. Take good care of your customers, just as you would want to be taken care of if you were the buyer. Customers are the most vital part of your eBay business.

  6. Step 6

Communicate often and clearly. Automate emails to be sent out when the auction closes, when payment is received, and when the item ships. Customer are eager to receive their items and the shipping notification is the most important to them.

  7. Step 7

Be friendly, patient, polite, and professional when working with customers, even if they aren't. Try to give customers the benefit of the doubt in most situations. Be the bigger person.

  8. Step 8

If a customer files a dispute, resolve it quickly. The longer a dispute drags on, the more likely a customer is to get angry and frustrated and give you low DSR scores.

  9. Step 9

If you have not received feedback from your customers within a reasonable amount of time, contact them and verify that they have received the item and are satisfied with the purchase.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your customers and your DSRs are the key to your success on eBay. Take care of your customers, and they will reward you with glowing comments and high ratings.

on 9/13/2009 I hate being lied to, and if an item was listed as New and was not disclosed in the auction description as smelling of smoke, I will leave negative feedback and an extremely low DSR. Any item that reeks of smoke is NOT new. I never bid on smokey items. Want to avoid negative feedback and terrible DSR's, Sellers? Then never, ever lie to a Buyer!

on 7/8/2009 As usual, great tips! I also agree with Katushia - I have both smokers and pets in my home and I make sure to mention it in every listing so that if someone is allergic or sensitive to either pets or smoke odors, they will know what to expect when they buy from me. I like my customers to feel that they are making an informed decision.

on 9/27/2008 All the above is very helpful. Also, a big concern on ebay is if the item is from a non smoking environment. Some people are allergic to and very sensitive to smoke. Just washing an item wont quite cut it. There is a way to remove those smoke odors though. See my article on removing smoke smells from clothing.
