How to Remove the Fish Smell From a Portable Cooler

Many fishermen have tried various cleaning agents and supplies to remove the fish smell from portable coolers as well as from the inside of boats. Unfortunately the stench often embeds itself into plastic surfaces making it difficult to rid of the smell. There are a couple of steps that will eradicate this smell. Does this Spark an idea?

      Thoroughly rinse out the cooler or plastic surface that the fish had touched. Be sure to remove any and all fish debris and scales. Be sure to rinse off all crevices and top surfaces of the lid of the cooler as well. Do not dry the wet surfaces. Sprinkle baking soda on the wet surfaces. An old toothbrush may be used to apply the baking soda to the cooler crevices. Let the baking soda water combination dry for a few minutes.

      Rinse the cooler completely making sure to remove all of the baking soda paste from the surface. Dry thoroughly with a towel. In order to get the small crevices, a tooth pick on the out side of a paper towel will help get the moisture in those small grooves.

      Leave a small amount of baking soda sprinkled in the bottom of the portable cooler and the boat to keep them free from odors an to help dissipate any smell that may be slightly lingering. This will also provide a fresh storage space the next time the cooler or boat is used.
