Step 1
Start up Photoshop and begin a new image. Set the width and height to 200 pixels and the resolution at 72 pixels. (You may set it to whatever you want, but for the sake of this step-by-step guide, play along...please.)
-
Step 2
Open the Horizontal Type Tool which is on the toolbar on the lefthand side of the editor. Then make a text box on the blank image. (You do this by clicking the upper left corner of the box with your cursor and dragging it down to the lower right corner.)
-
Step 3
Set the text to 48pt font and center justify. Also, set the color to...ummm...let's say...blue. Press enter a couple times in the text box (this will help the text to look more centered in the box). Then type the word "shadow" in the text box. The word "shadow" should be in the center of the image. It should be blue. And it should be fairly large. And soon it will have a shadow behind it.
-
Step 4
Go to the "styles and effects" section on the rightside of the editor. (You may have moved it somewhere else, but that is where it is default-wise in Photoshop Elements version 4.0.) In this section, there should be two drop-down menus at the top. Make sure the drop-down menu on the left is set to "layer styles." Then set the drop-down menu on the right to "drop shadows."
-
Step 5
Choose one of the "drop shadow" options which should be now before your eyes in the "styles and effects" section. Click on the "low" shadow option and notice the shadow created behind the text. Experiment to find a shadow which fits your desires for the text. And have fun! Now you are a shadow-maker!
