How to Meet People at School

School is hard enough when all you are thinking about tests and homework. Add in the pressure of meeting people and making friends, and the challenge becomes even greater. As the old saying goes, there’s someone for everyone out there, and if you know how to go about it, you can find your someone too.

Be yourself. Don't try to fit into a clique or a group of people just because they seem to be more "popular" or well liked. As soon as you start talking to them, they'll know in an instant that you're putting them on. Your best bet to meet people and make friends at school is to just be yourself. Even if you don't think that there are other people out there like you, you'll find out soon enough that there are like-minded people. Being yourself will make those other people just like you see that they aren't alone, and the friendships you make with them will be strong.

Participate in after school activities. A great way to meet other people at school is to get involved in extra-curricular activities. Many schools are now branching out from the traditional activities like sports. There are many schools that now have drama clubs, chess teams, speech and debate teams and many other activities. Joining one of these organizations will ensure that everyone else participating has very similar interests as you.

Volunteer to tutor. If there is a subject that you excel in, a great way to both help out and meet new friends is to tutor. This will give you great one on one time with somebody who is studying a subject that you know a lot about, so there will be plenty to talk about. Also, if you are tutoring them, they will most likely be very grateful for your help and strong friendships can be forged from that bond.

Attend all-school events. Any time there is an all-school event, attend it. Whether it is a sporting event (intra-mural or against another school), a pep rally or a dance, these are all great ways to meet new friends. You may go to one of these events alone and realize that you are seated near another student who is in one of your classes. Strike up a casual conversation. It's great to talk about things that have nothing to do with school outside of the classroom. That way, the next time you go into that class and the two of you see each other, you may have more to talk about than the homework assignment.

Say hello to other students. If you see someone you recognize in the hall, go out of your way to say hello. It seems like a small gesture, but something like that can really brighten another student's bad day. Being outgoing is a fantastic way to put your face in people's minds, as well. Soon, you may be remembered as "that nice guy who always says hello to me."
