A "Dark Knight" theme party will be on the list of many fans who have watched this movie. Why not make a cake to match? If you divide the batter of three cake mixes between two 9-by 13-inch pans you will have a substantial cake to decorate. Place them on a metal cookie sheet to maintain the look of the movie.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two 9- by 13-inch cakes
  • 4 to 6 cups confectioner's sugar based frosting
  • 1 container each blue and red concentrated paste
  • 1 tube black decorating gel
  • Knife or spatula
  • Plastic spoon and fork
  • Toothpicks
  • Decorating bag or plastic sandwich bag
  • "Dark Knight" Batman movie poster
  1. Step 1

Place 1/2 cup white frosting in decorator or plastic sandwich bag and set in refrigerator. Scoop another 1/8 cup into small bowl or cup. Set aside. Place mixer bowl of remaining frosting within easy reach. Frost the bottom layer of the cake. Place next layer on top and frost with a layer of white frosting.

  2. Step 2

Take a toothpick and scoop out a small pea sized amount of blue concentrated paste. Continue to use the toothpick and swirl the paste lightly into the frosting at the side of the mixer bowl. It will have a variegated appearance. Place the movie poster close by for reference as you go through the next steps.

  3. Step 3

Spoon out three scoops of the blue, dark blue and white frosting onto the cake. Use plastic spoon if desired.

  4. Step 4

Frost with knife or spatula back and forth across the cake width from right to left. If you are left handed and it is more comfortable to go left to right that is fine. Stay with one direction with each spread.

  5. Step 5

Coat the entire cake top and sides, being careful to keep the variegations.

  6. Step 6

Take the tube of black gel and squirt a small amount of it in the 1/8 cup of set aside frosting. Stir to mix to a light gray. With the tip of the knife, work some gray frosting into the center area of the frosted cake top.

  7. Step 7

Grasp the two center tines on the plastic fork and snap them off. Discard tines.

  8. Step 8

Starting at the bottom edge of the cake draw the fork across the width of the cake, from right to left, down into the frosting. Etch two furrows into the frosting. You will have two white lines in the surface from the undercoating of frosting.

  9. Step 9

Place fork with lowest tine in the top furrow and pull across the cake again. This will give even spaces between the rows of lines. You now have 3 lines. Continue pulling fork across the cake until you reach the top.

  10. Step 10

Break off one of the remaining tines on the fork. Discard tine. Draw vertical lines here and there to complete a brick wall effect in the frosting all over the cake.

  11. Step 11

Take the tube of black gel and draw two circles about 3 inches from the top of the cake.

  12. Step 12

Make the circles larger and slightly uneven to give a graffiti appearance. Use the black gel tube to draw lines here and there in the brick furrows to add shading. Use the fork to spread the gel further along the lines.

  13. Step 13

Take a toothpick and draw the outline of the Batman insignia into the frosting about 4 inches from the bottom of the cake. Dip a clean toothpick into the red concentrate paste and mix into a small amount of white frosting.

  14. Step 14

Roughly outline the insignia with red frosting using the toothpick. Roll toothpick sideways over the interior of insignia for a splattered look. Make the lower points of the bat wings look as if paint is running down the brick wall.

  15. Step 15

Remove bag of white frosting from refrigerator. If using sandwich bag, take scissors and snip a tiny piece off of one corner. Gently squeeze frosting into the opening.

  16. Step 16

Carefully pipe the words, "Why so serious" at the top of the cake. Pipe "The Dark Knight" or "The Dark (name of person)" at the bottom of the cake. If you make a mistake when piping words, smooth out the frosting with knife or spatula and write it again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Home made confectioner's sugar based frosting is highly recommended. Store bought container frosting is too soft.
  • Do not over mix the blue variegated frosting or you lose the wall effect.
