Instructions

Gather your images. For this card front we are going to use an image of your home and some eerie backdrops. If you don’t have a digital image of your house or apartment building, take a few good shots that include the entire home or building.

Go to Webshots or stock.xchng (see Resources) and search for a stormy sky or scary backdrop. This image is called "Portal to Heaven," and I found it on stock.xchng.

Open Adobe Photoshop and open your two digital photos--one of your home and the other the scary backdrop. To open your files, go to "File" > "Open" and then browse to find your images.

    • 4

Look at your house image. Take the magnetic lasso tool and outline the house.

    • 5

Go to the arrow tool and drag your house image onto the scary backdrop you have selected. You’ll see a scissor icon appear as you drag, meaning you are cutting the house out and pasting it onto your backdrop.

    • 6

Resize your home image if it is bigger than your backdrop. Click on the house, and then go to "Edit" and "Free Transform." You’ll see “handles” appear, so simply grab a corner handle and resize. Once you are happy with the size, click on the arrow tool again, and then click on "Apply" from the pop-up menu.

Add text to your image by clicking on the “T” tool and placing the “I” icon where you want your text to be. A text box will appear, offering you options for font size, color and style. Make your selections and tweak until it’s just right.

Save the image as a .jpg file.

    • 9

Open Microsoft Word or Publisher and create a card using the templates provided or the instructions on your computer card stock. Insert your Adobe Photoshop image on your card front just as you would any image, and resize as needed.

If you don’t want to use a different backdrop, simply apply an artistic filter over your original home image for some freaky and fun results. For the results here, I applied the Glowing Edges filter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play around with different backdrops until you find the perfect spooky look.
