Yoga Class

Yoga has been practiced in India since at least 900 BCE. It has a rich history and is even hinted at in Hindu sacred texts. With such a rich history, it is no wonder that yoga has become a common practice all over the world. With its physical and meditative benefits, it has become embedded in the modern world's pop culture. Performing the yoga positions, however, isn't the only thing a "yogi" (male) or "yogini" (female) must consider. They must also keep their yoga mats clean and there is no better way to keep such a spiritual thing clean than with all natural materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the spray bottle up with water. Afterwards, add 20 to 30 drops of the tea tree essential oil into the bottle (tea tree essential oil can be purchased at organic stores). Place the sprayer back onto the bottle. You can now take the bottle with you wherever you practice yoga.

    • 2

Spray down your entire mat after every yoga session. Afterwards, use the towel to dry off the mixture. This is an essential daily cleaning procedure that will ensure that your mat never gets filthy. No other substance in necessary to clean your mat because tea tree essential oil is anti-bacterial and anti-viral.

    • 3

Use a washing machine if a deep cleaning is necessary. If you've gone a while without cleaning the mat, the tea tree essential oil may not be enough. Just drop the mat into the washing machine and wash it on "cold." After the cycle is complete, hang the mat out to dry. It is best to allow the mat to dry for two days. Do not put the mat in the dryer. The mats are rubber and therefore safe in the washing machine, but not the dryer.

    • 4

Use your bathtub if you are wary of using the washing machine. Fill the tub about 1/3 full of cold water. Place the mat into the water and allow it to soak.

    • 5

Scrub the mat clean with a kitchen sponge. After doing this, drain the water out of the tub and fill it again about 1/3 full of water. This will rinse off the mat. Continue this step until the water runs clean after rinsing the mat. Remove the mat and use a towel (or multiple towels) to dry off the mat. Finally, hang the mat out to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure your feet are always clean before getting on the mat. This will help the mat stay clean.

  • Invest in a Mysore rug. It goes over a yoga mat and can help it stay clean. It is also machine washable.
