The bold but friendly Parson Russell terrier is very athletic and clever. It is a great game hunter, showing tenacity and courageousness, but at home it is playful and affectionate. This is a submissive terrier, but not shy. It should also get along with other dogs, but be alert and confident.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the overall appearance of the Parson Russell Terrier. It is a medium sized dog, but is strong and has endurance. It must be able to chase game above and underground. Males are about 14 inches at the withers and females are about 13 inches at the withers. The breed, both male and female, weighs 13 to17 pounds. This is a short breed, with the height being a bit shorter than the length of the dog.

  2. Step 2

Check that the head is in proportion with the rest of the body, giving it a balanced appearance. The intelligent expression is full of life. The dark, almond-shaped eyes do not protrude. They are dark in color, and are outlined by dark rims. The v-shaped ears are small and carried folded down, covering the ear opening. The muzzle, when measured from the stop to the nose, is a bit shorter than the measurement from the stop to the occiput. The black nose is fully pigmented.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the muscular neck arches slightly into the well-angulated shoulders. The narrow chest has some depth, and must be flexible. The front feet are round and cat-like with thick, tough pads. The rear is muscular and angulated. The rear feet are also round and cat-like with thick tough pads. The tail is docked and carried high when in motion, but carried low--not below the horizontal--when at rest or baiting.

  4. Step 4

Pet the smooth coat of the Parson Russell Terrier. It is a double coat has harsh outside hair. It should be straight. The coat may be white or white with black or tan markings. It may also be tri-color--a combination of the white and white with markings, but it will be mostly white.
