Instructions

    • 1

Find the basic decoration that you want to create, using the Internet, coloring books, pattern books or other resources such as spooky books.

    • 2

Photocopy your pattern. The best types of designs to transfer are black-and-white images since they are the easiest to see and trace. Copy the black-and-white image onto a transparency or overhead projector sheet. It is cheap and inexpensive and will serve as the basis of your projection.

    • 3

Plug in your overhead projector and secure your transparency underneath the lens. Push or refocus the knob until it is the size and position you want it on the wall where you will secure your butcher paper.

    • 4

Using tape, secure your butcher paper to the wall surface you will be tracing on, making sure all the wrinkles and corners are smooth.

    • 5

Use a black or dark marker or paint pen to carefully trace the design onto the paper and fill in places where the lines are thicker than the others. To check how you are doing, simply switch off the projector for a moment to see if you have missed any places.

    • 6

Use other paints or markers to decorate and color your design. Your kids can help you make your ghost or scarecrow extra spooky. Add lots of extras to it, including background, greetings and your family name!

    • 7

If you have a dark doorway or entry way, use a simple lawn light to cast light onto the design and make your house inviting to trick-or-treaters and illuminate your one-of-a-kind design!

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a couple pieces of butcher paper handy in case you make a mistake. It is cheap, and it is always better to be safe than sorry.

  • Be careful about using markers that bleed through paper. You may end up with your spooky design on your bedroom wall! If you are worried about this, place another piece of paper underneath it to prevent bleeding.
