How to Become a Vet Tech in Austrailia

Save

In Australia a vet tech is considered a vet nurse though the responsibilities are exactly the same. A vet nurse can earn anywhere from $25,000 to $40,000 a year. The more you learn and the more experience you have the more money you earn. The demand for vet nurses is low but if you follow these steps, learn as much as you can and get to know several veterinarians you should be able to get your foot in the door.

  • Get your education. In order to do this you will need to go to a community college or a vet tech/vet nurse school. There are four levels of certification you will need to go through before earning your diploma.

  • Become certified. There are four levels of certification that you will need to go through before earning a certificate. The first and second levels focus on animals. The third level studies technology, captive animals, and companion animal services. The fourth and final level studies animal control and regulation. The certification will be recognized by all states in Australia.

  • Get trained by an accredited trainer through Veterinary Nursing Training. They will take you through the next level of your education, training that explores anesthesia, cleaning and sterilizing equipment, running lab tests, ordering drugs and assisting the veterinarian with a patient. In Australia they have a list of registered training provided online at www.ntis.gov.au.

  • Volunteer at veterinary clinics. In Australia there is a low demand for veterinary nurses, therefore, you should work as a volunteer at first or try working in a kennel to gain some experience working with animals. After a period of time the veterinarian may decide to hire you as a vet nurse.

  • Become registered. You can become a registered vet nurse through the Vet Nurses Council of Australia. Being registered through the council will give you professionalism and prestige and a better chance at being hired.
