Settle a Child Down for Bedtime

A major complaint of many parents who have toddlers or young children is that they refuse to settle down for bedtime. A wide-awake toddler keeps the parents up as well, and when he finally goes to sleep, he's cranky the next morning. There are some things that you can try that may help, but remember that not all children will benefit.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Give your child a warm bath after dinner and homework, if they are in school. Put them in loose fitting and comfortable sleepware that is not restrictive.

    • 2

Purchase or record some movies that have less action, since action or sports movies have a tendency to get a child excited by becoming too involved in the show. Be careful when purchasing animated movies, as they can also have an excessive amount of action in them.

If you have more than one child, suggest that they find a board or card game to play. This will keep them involved in an activity that does not include wrestling around or throwing balls. These activities will help them keep calmer in preparation for bedtime.

Put out a glass of milk about an hour before bedtime so that the milk becomes room temperature. Give your child a small glass of milk about one hour before bed. According to psychologist Dr. Mark Goodman, giving your child a small glass of tepid milk and a banana will help them sleep.

Avoid giving your child soda or any other beverage that has caffeine in it after dinner is over. Also avoid giving your child a lot of sweets after dinner.

    • 6

Avoid keeping a television or DVD player in your child's bedroom. This may encourage your child to stay awake to watch a movie or show rather than closing their eyes and going to sleep.

    • 7

Pick out a book with your child to buy or check out at the local library. At bedtime, read them a story or short simple book. If your child doesn't fall asleep while you are reading, the story will further relax them in preparation for sleep.

Follow the same routine every night in order to help your child develop a pattern of behavior for bedtime.
