How to Make Coins Disappear

How to Make Coins Disappear thumbnail
(When learning to make coins disappear, it's easier to practice with a penny.)

As a child, I was amazed with every magic trick my father would practice before me. I would often ask that timeless question "Wow! How did you do that?!" He would then drop his voice down to a whisper, asking if I could keep a secret. Excited, I would agree... even though I already knew the next thing he would say. "So can I."

Fortunately, I was lucky to learn these tricks, after weeks and weeks of daughter-like pestering. Keeping true to the value of NOT sharing how a trick is done (it's far more impressive when you don't know) this article if for those who wish to learn the most basic magic tricks- the absolute easiest trick... making money disappear. Anyone can do it!

If you are interested in performing magic tricks, you must first make an unspoken promise to yourself, and to fans of the trick, that when they ask "Wow, how did you do that?!" you will give them any answer BUT the answer they THINK they want.

Learning to make money disappear is usually the first step to learning more complicated magic tricks and illusions. So the first step would be finding one friend you can trust to watch you practice, and offer helpful advice. A patient friend like this can notice what an audience would, slight mistakes that you might not realize you are making.

Have a "story." Making money appear and disappear are almost the same (in the world of magic at least), and you need to have your own unique style behind this. Because this trick uses the concept of money disappearing and appearing, it's very easy to have a humorous story tied to your act. Avoid being too corny!

As mentioned earlier, only in the magic world is it as easy to make money appear as it is to make money disappear. The most important thing is to pay attention to where your audience is paying attention. Better yet... guide where your audience is paying attention. This is very easy to do, because people are easy to manipulate. If you have a super hot assistant wearing something very skimpy, you can walk right out onto the stage and expect people to react (once you have their attention on you) as if you appeared out of nowhere.

So the trick is to keep somebody focusing on your right hand, by using a lot of movement and action, while your left hand is seemingly nonexistent. Practice this with your friend, by telling a story actively moving your right hand. In the meantime, hold a penny in your left hand and see if your friend notices. If they do, you are not being discreet enough with "What's going on over there."

Once you have mastered guiding somebody's attention, the rest is a piece of cake. Your right hand is the "show hand." You will open your right hand so the palm is facing up, with your fingers spread out. Your right hand is playing the lead. Place the penny onto the palm of your show hand so that your audience can see it is sitting in plain sight. Wiggle your fingers dramatically and then close your show hand up into a fist, so the penny is now hidden from watchful eyes.

This is where the trick comes in to play, and where you will need to practice the most before you can comfortably complete this step. While you are closing your right hand, the 'backup' hand will be pointing to the show hand. Waving over your fist, helping to close the fingers, and tapping on the back of your hand are all things you can do to keep the audience focused on that show hand.

While you were closing your fingers, you sneaked the penny from the show hand into the palm of your left hand. This is the part that needs the most practice to be done without messing up and being too obvious, but the more you try it the easier it becomes. This act of palming is the root for many illusions, so once you master this trick you open up the door to many more tricks.

You can leave the penny in the palm of your left hand, and keep both hands in plain sight. As long as your left hand is palm down and slightly curved to keep the penny in place between fingers (there are many ways to do this discreetly), nobody should be able to tell that the penny is right there in your left hand.

To advance, if you can sneak your left hand away for just a moment and keep people focused on the show hand, you can easily hide the penny somewhere else, so when you open your right hand to show the penny is missing, you can show both palms for an increased "wow" effect.
