As your friends list on LiveJournal grows, it often feels like another full-time job just keeping up with the daily postings. Large communities flood your friends list, forcing you to scroll through several pages before finding the entries you care about most. LiveJournal friends filters break up your buddy list into groups like close friends, family members, and fan communities. Choose a group to sort by, and those are the only entries you'll see, making it easier to get through the posts you're truly interested in. Creating friends filters in LiveJournal customizes your experience and cuts down on wasted time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose "Friends," then "Manage Custom Groups" from the LiveJournal menu bar.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "New" button at the bottom of the "Manage Custom Groups" page.

  3. Step 3

Type in a name for your new filter in the window box that opens on the screen. This group title can be anything that helps you organize your friends list. Groups can be organized by your relationship to those friends, by shared interests, or even by simple alphabetical or daily group breakdowns. Click the "OK" button after you've entered the title.

  4. Step 4

Look for your new group title, which should be highlighted in the "Your custom friends groups" section. Move to the second column, which is titled "Not in group." Click on the first friend you want to add to this filter. Holding down the "Ctrl" key, click on the rest of the friends you want to add to the group.

  5. Step 5

Click the double arrow key that points to the third column. All the friends you highlighted should now appear in the "In group" section. If you've made a mistake, simply highlight the friend you want to remove and click the double arrow key that points back to the "Not in group" column.

  6. Step 6

Use the "Public" button to allow visitors to your LiveJournal the ability to use this filter when viewing your friends list (the default setting is "Private"). Clicking the "Private" button will return access to you alone.

  7. Step 7

Click on the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the screen when done. Your new custom filter is now saved.

  8. Step 8

Choose "Friends" and then "Filter Friends Page" from the LiveJournal menu bar.

  9. Step 9

Select which groups of friends you want to look at, then click "View." Clicking on the linked titles will take you directly to those filtered entries.

  10. Step 10

Click on the custom filter when making a new post, and only that group of friends will be able to read that post.

Tips & Warnings
  • Unfriending someone that you have a problem with can sometimes lead to unnecessary LiveJournal "drama." Friends filters can be a way to eliminate the person from your friends list view, giving you peace of mind and avoiding confrontation.
  • LiveJournal communities can be added to filters, but be aware that members of those communities will not be able to read your friends-locked posts, no matter what group filter they are placed in.
