How to Find Atlanta's Best Tourist Spots

Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the southern United States' largest and most exciting metropolitan areas. With the right mix of Southern charm and big city flair, Atlanta is an ideal tourist destination. It boasts plenty of parks, museums, shopping centers and other attractions, appealing to more than 2.5 million annually from all over the world. If you're planning a trip to Atlanta, check out some of the city's best tourism spots.

  1. Step 1

    Go to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The serene Botanical Garden encompasses more than 20 indoor and outdoor plant collections, ranging from winter garden plants to tropical plants, rainforests to deserts. The Japanese and Rose gardens are must-sees. Simply stroll the gardens for an up-close, in-depth look at the amazing variety of plant life.

  2. Step 2

    Visit the World of Coca Cola at Pemberton Place. Named after Coca Cola's founder, John Pemberton, this attraction details the history of one of the world''s most popular beverages, which originated in Atlanta back in the 1800s. One of the most interesting parts of the exhibition is "The Lobby," which showcases Coca Cola bottles made out of different materials, from different eras and different countries.

  3. Step 3

    Check out the Center for Puppetry Arts. This is a wonderful place to observe puppetry and everything puppet-related, from performance to education. Puppet shows here include classics like "The Ugly Duckling" and "Jack and the Beanstalk." A museum showcases puppets through history and from all over the world. Plus, don't miss "Puppets: The Power of Wonder," an interactive display of more than 300 puppets.

  4. Step 4

    See the Atlanta "Cyclorama." One of the largest oil paintings in the world, the "Cyclorama" is a panoramic depiction of the American Civil War Battle of Atlanta. Viewers are seated while the painting moves around them in a circle. It illustrates the fierce fighting between Confederate and Union soldiers and is a fascinating visual way to learn about the American Civil War.

  5. Step 5

    Visit Herndon Home. The 1910 Herndon Home was built for Alonzo Franklin Herndon, founder of Atlanta Life Insurance Company. Herndon was born into slavery and, after founding the insurance company, became Atlanta's first African-American millionaire. Located in the Vine City section of Atlanta, this majestic, historical landmark is distinct for its multicolored brick exterior and awe-inspiring Corinthian columns at the entryway. Built by local black craftsmen, the house marks a turning point for African-American history. Tourists can walk around the Herndon Home freely or take a guided walking tour.

  6. Step 6

    Shop at Lenox Square Shopping Center. Considered the best mall in the city, the beautifully landscaped Lenox houses a mind-boggling selection of stores and restaurants. You'll find major chain clothing stores like the Gap, Macy's, and Bath and Body Works, and tasty dining options including restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen and Prime Restaurant.

Tips & Warnings
  • Other shopping ares in the city include Underground Atlanta and Phipps Plaza. Phipps Plaza is fun for its large 14-screen movie theater complex.
  • Little Five Points, a trendy section of Atlanta, is know for its boutiques and smaller shops for a more eclectic side of Atlanta shopping.
