How to Sew Burp Cloths for a Baby
Burp cloths are handy for cleaning up baby spit-up, drool and other sorts of fluids that come out unexpectedly. With some creativity, fabric and a sewing machine, you can make your own baby burp cloths that are functional and cute.

Purchase a pack of prefolded white cloth diapers. The diapers will serve as your base fabric and will be transformed into a fashionable burp cloth.

Choose your fabric. You can go to a fabric store and buy flannel, cotton or any material you'd like. It is more useful if the material is absorbent.

Cut your fabric. Cut a rectangular strip of fabric that will fit in the center of your prefolded diaper. When measuring your fabric, it should be as long as the diaper and as wide as the center panel. Leave a 1/2 inch of additional material on all sides of the fabric.

Choose your thread. You can coordinate colors or use a thread to accent your fabric.

Sew your hem. Measure in 1/2 inch on all sides of your fabric and fold it over twice to form your neat edge; this is your hem. Iron down your folds so that they lay neatly. Pin the edges and sew your hem.

Cut the ribbon. Cut two strips of ribbon 1/2 inch longer than the length of your cloth diaper.

Take the fabric strip and overlay it on the prefolded cloth diaper down the center.

Run the ribbon on both edges of the fabric overlay and pin it in place. Remember to tuck the edges of your ribbon under to form a nice edge.

Sew through all three layers--the prefolded cloth diaper, fabric overlay and ribbon. Sew a seam on the inside edge of the ribbons (next to the fabric overlay).

Repeat on the outer edge seams of the ribbon. You want the ribbons to be secured down firmly. Otherwise, they'll come up easily during use or bother the baby.

Wash your finished project. Before use, each burp cloth should be washed in a gentle detergent that won't hurt a baby's delicate skin.
