You might not consider yourself "neat," but don't let that stop you from organizing your bedroom. Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. When things get cluttered or out of order, it may prevent you from truly relaxing, or even getting proper sleep. Even if you have given up, and feel your bedroom is a helpless case, you can get it together, organize your bedroom, and transform it into the attractive, relaxing sanctuary you long for!

Things You'll Need:

  • Decorative boxes
  1. Step 1

Start by going through your closets, dressers and armoires giving away to charity any clothing items you haven’t worn in a year or more. You will be surprised at how many things you have forgotten about, and you will feel so much better having more space to put things. Do the same with shoes and purses. Store clothes away according to season in flat airtight bags under you bed, giving you extra room and helping with clothing organization. (See resources below for places to purchase airtight bags.) Arrange clothes by category. (dresses, skirts, pants, long sleeve blouses, short sleeve blouses, other tops.)

  2. Step 2

Sort through bookshelves, keeping books that have sentimental value, or those from which you plan to glean information. Local nursing homes and prisons are in need of book donations and there are other organizations that will ship textbooks to disadvantaged schools overseas. Again this should free up some space for pretty, decorative items or something you really need.

  3. Step 3

Place any unsightly paperwork in attractive decorative boxes. Stores that carry home goods, usually carry a selection of handsome boxes for placing items that you want to keep hidden. These boxes come in many colors and patterns, and when matched to your room’s décor, add a beautiful touch. You can have a box for greeting cards that may be jammed in drawers, keepsake letters and other memories, mail, or collected business cards. Stay organized by always placing these items in their designated boxes.

  4. Step 4

Have drawers built into your night tables if they don't have them already. If they cannot be built, place decorative baskets on or under the table. In the drawers or baskets, you can place any items you may use in bed on a regular basis, such as pens, pencils, notepads, tissues, nail files, hand lotions or books. This way, these items will always be at your fingertips at bedtime and put away.

  5. Step 5

Before bed each night put your clothes either in the dirty clothes hamper or back in the closet or dresser (depending on freshness of course). Avoid folding the clothes, and placing them on a chair because it will become a habit quickly and by the end of the week, you will have a massive pile. The few seconds it takes to put the clothes away will make a world of difference in your motivation to stay organized.

  6. Step 6

Make your bed immediately each day upon rising, replacing any decorative pillows you may have onto the bed. Finally, the best way to stay organized, is to go through every single item in your bedroom, from scraps of paper on your desk, to junk thrown in a drawer and get rid of things you are not using annually.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to procrastinate putting things in their designated places. The more mess that builds up, the harder it is to get motivated to clean it up.
