Take a stroll through Chapultepec Park. This large park is the primary park of Mexico City. It is also a historical site with strong ties to Aztec history, as Toltec ruler Huemec hanged himself there. Despite the park's gruesome past, it is beautiful with cedar trees, a botanical garden, sports facilities, and tranquil picnic areas.

Go to the Basilicas of Guadalupe. The Basilicas of Guadalupe are pilgrimage churches, with an Old Basilica and a New Basilica. The Old Basilica was replaced with the New Basilica because it sank too deeply into the swampy grounds of the churches. However, both are still standing which makes for an interesting comparison. There is also a museum here, containing religious artwork that goes all the way back to the 17th century.

Relax at the Parque Alameda Central. This is a serene park with trees, fountains, and gorgeous sculptures. It has been in existence, remarkably, since 1592, and over the times has had many purposes, including being a marketplace at one point. The park is always crowded with visitors and has a festive, happy atmosphere. This is a great place to people watch and truly feel the spirit of Mexico City.

Visit the Plaza de Santa Domingo. This is a city square in the colonial style that has, notably, preserved an authentically Spanish ambiance. The square has two monuments, including one of Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, a female Mexican independence hero, and another one of Manuel Carmon y Valle, a well-known and historically respected Mexican doctor.

Stop by Plaza San Jacinto on a Saturday. Plaza San Jacinto is an idyllic area that is home to the adorable Bazar Sabado, which is held every Saturday. At the Bazar Sabado, visitors can browse through traditional arts and crafts items as well as modern art pieces. This is a good place to get a look at and purchase some genuine Mexican art crafts.
