How to Dial Overseas on a Fax Machine
There are certain rules to follow when dialing a fax number internationally from the United States. Each country has a country code that you need to dial first. There is also a code that you need to dial to signal that you are going to be dialing an international number. For the United States, the whole code to dial out of the country is 011. You may notice that some fax numbers overseas have a plus sign infront and you can translate this to 011 when calling from the States. Follow the steps below to make it an efficient exercise.

Call your phone company and ask them if your phone is set up to dial overseas phone numbers. Some companies block dialing overseas and people buy phone cards whenever they need to contact someone abroad. Using your phone directly to dial an overseas number will make it much easier to send fax because you won't have to deal with connecting calls.

Read the user's guide for your machine to know certain features that need to be switched on or functions that need to be changed to overseas dialing. Fax machines are different and some may let you automatically dial an international number but others require selecting a specified overseas function. Basically, make sure that your fax machine can dial internationally.

Get a phone book and locate the country code of the country to which you want to send your fax. You can also use websites that allow you to select the country where the fax is originating from and the receiving country. On a piece of paper, write 011+ country code + area code + phone number

Prepare the fax just as you would when sending a regular domestic fax. Dial the number sequence that you have written down on a piece of paper and hit send.

Call the person you sent a fax to to make sure they received your fax. Some fax machines give you a receipt but if your machine doesn't, it is best to make sure that they have received it.
