How to Make a Kids' Floor Pillow
Henny Youngman, comedian and the King of One Liners, said, "What is a home without children? Quiet." If you live with children in your home or in your life then you know this to be true. And where there are kids, there are more kids. They dig in the fridge, jump on the beds and wallow on the furniture. If you find that you have so many children you don't know what to do and are running out of room, you should consider making kids' floor pillows. Floor pillows are both decorative and functional, providing alternative seating for reading, watching TV and relaxing. Making kids' floor pillows is easy and very inexpensive.
Things You'll Need
- Fabric
- Pillow stuffing

Preparation
-
1
Select the fabric for the pillow. You want to choose a fabric that will stand up to kids. There are many kid friendly fabrics available such as fleece, corduroy, denim, jersey knit, knit, cotton and suede. Fabrics can be chosen to match the decor of any room.
-
2
Determine what size you want the pillow to be. The typical size of a body pillow is 52 by 18 inches but you can make the pillow any size that suites you. One idea is to measure the height of your child and make the pillow accordingly.
-
-
3
Choose the stuffing for your pillow. Many fillers are available including polyester fiber, shredded foam and feathers. Things to consider when choosing the stuffing is cost, durability and availability. Polyester fiber is less expensive and you can buy it in most discount stores. It is also less messy if it were to spring a leak. Be sure that you have enough stuffing to fill the pillow firmly.
-
4
Decide how you will stitch the pillow together. A pillow is easily made on a sewing machine but can be hand stitched as well. Hand stitching will take more time but is very simple.
-
5
Cut the fabric according to the size pillow you want to make, adding a half inch to each side for the seam allowance. If you are making a pillow that is 52 by 18 inches the pieces will be 52 1/2 by 18 1/2 inches.
-
6
Fold down a half inch seam on one end of the cut fabric and press down with an iron. This will make stitching the pillow closed easier once you add the stuffing.
Putting The Pillow Together
-
7
Align pieces together with the inside facing out. Pin in place with strait pins to hold in place.
- 8
-
9
Stuff the pillow with the stuffing you chose. If using polyester fiber tear off handfuls at a time. Stuff the corners well and continue packing in the stuffing to achieve the fullness you desire.
