Cat owners at one time or another will have to administer medications to their cats. There are several methods to get the medicine into cats, and some are easier than others. However, since all cats are not alike, you will have to experiment to see which method works best with your pet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cat
  • Pills
  • Liquid medicine
  • Butter
  • Nutrical
  • Water
  • Tuna juice
  1. Step 1

Put a little butter on the pill and hold the pill in between the thumb and forefinger of your dominant hand. Put the cat in your lap and with your other hand, gently grip the cat's upper jaw above its snout. Use the thumb and forefinger of that hand to pull up on the upper jaw just behind the pointy canine teeth. Use the second and third fingers of the dominant hand to push down on the lower back teeth as you push the pill down into the cat's throat.

  2. Step 2

Rub the cat's chin and throat to encourage it to swallow the pill. Offer the cat some water or tuna juice to help wash down the pill.

  3. Step 3

Use a 1cc or "TB" syringe to give your cat water if he will not drink any liquid after pilling. Fill the syringe with water and place the end of the syringe in the side of his mouth, making sure the end is over the back teeth. Press down on the plunger slowly and rub the cat's chin and neck to encourage it to swallow. If your cat will take water like this, ask your vet for liquid medications, as it may be easier to administer than pills.

  4. Step 4

If your cat will not take any liquid after you have given it the pill, put some Nutrical on its paw and it will lick it off. You may also put some on his nose and it will encourage licking and swallowing, which helps the pill to go down.

  5. Step 5

Use Pill Pockets as another option for pilling cats. Simply press the pill into one of these treats and get your cat to eat it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remain calm when pilling your pet.
  • Talk quietly to it while administering the medicine.
  • Don't force your finger down the cat's throat, as it will injure the soft tissue.
