Make fashionable infant head wear for every occasion by designing each bow and headband from a variety of fabrics. Headbands can be made of knit, ribbon or stretchy lace. Make a variety of looks for an infant girl by using loopy bows made with grosgrain, organza or lace. Choose monochromatic or assorted colors and in different sizes. This same pattern may be used for the older child.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ribbon for bow, 3/4 inches wide
  • Ribbon for headband, 1 1/2 inches wide
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Fray check
  1. Step 1

Measure the length needed and cut the wide ribbon that is to be the headband. Use the sewing machine to secure the overlapped ends together.

  2. Step 2

Design a loopy bow, by layering three lengths of 3/4 inches of grosgrain ribbon. Allow a generous length to complete the bow before cutting.

  3. Step 3

Pierce the ribbons with the needle and a long length of double knotted thread, through all layers of grosgrain ribbon. Attach the ribbon slightly off-center to the headband.

  4. Step 4

Take up a loop, any size. The bigger the loop, the taller the bow will be. Wrap the thread around the headband twice, slightly pulling. Spread the loop, then wrap the thread again twice, pulling tightly this time. Make another loop at a downward angle, repeating the next loop at an upward angle, until the bow is complete. Spread all loops.

  5. Step 5

Turn under the headband and secure with knotted thread. Cut the tails and seal the ends of the ribbon with fray check.

Tips & Warnings
  • Headbands and bows may be made of lace or satin ribbon.
  • Barrettes may be made by using the same instructions as for the headband.
