A person is diagnosed with bladder cancer when malignant cells begin to grow in the bladder. With any type of cancer, early diagnosis is the key. Those who receive treatment early are more likely to make a full recovery. Thus, it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of bladder cancer and seek immediate medical attention.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Detect blood in the urine. Several medical conditions result in bloody urine such as kidney stones and bladder infections. Still, blood in the urine should always be checked by a physician. This is an early sign of bladder cancer.

  2. Step 2

Notice pain or a burning sensation when urinating. In the beginning, many conditions mimic bladder cancer, which is why the illness often goes undetected. Caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and sodas can also cause painful urination. However, if discomfort persists for several days or weeks, it’s time to see a doctor.

  3. Step 3

Detect inability to urinate. Healthy kidneys and bladders are able to pass urine with little difficulty. Some people with bladder cancer have the urge to urinate, but are unable to do so. Tumors that develop in the bladder can block the normal passage of urine.

  4. Step 4

Feel pain in the lower back. Although bladder cancer affects the bladder, pain may be felt around the kidneys. Sufferers may feel a persistent dull or sharp pain in the lower back that doesn’t respond to pain medications.

  5. Step 5

Begin to lose weight. In advance stages, many bladder cancer sufferers deal with loss of appetite. As a result, patients stop eating and lose weight.
