If you learn only one knot, make sure it is the uni-knot. This easily-tied knot is versatile and when tightened correctly will hold up to 100 percent of the line strength. Developed by Vic Dumaway, this knot is used by many fishermen across the country.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rod and reel
  • Fishing line
  • Lure
  • Pliers with side cutters
  1. Step 1

Run 6 to 8 inches of line through the swivel or hook eyelet. Holding both both lines together, run the tag end back toward the eyelet, forming a loop, as in the image.

  2. Step 2

Pinch both lines with the thumb and forefinger of your left hand, just above the eyelet. Make six loops around the doubled lines, starting just above your fingers and working upward.

  3. Step 3

Keeping your grip on the line, pull the tag end until they wrap snug down against each other tightly. Pull on the standing end of the line and slide the knot down to the eyelet. Trim the tag end when knot is finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • Moistening the knot with water will help to seat all of the loops when the knot is tightened.
  • Wear safety glasses and use caution when working around hooks.
