How to Identify Symptoms of Appendicitis

Appendicitis is a condition that results from an inflammation of the appendix, which is a small pouch that is attached to a portion of the large intestine. While the appendix does not seem to serve any need within the human body, if it becomes swollen or inflamed, it can cause a multitude of dangers. An appendicitis attack results from unknown causes. It may be the result of blockage of the appendix by fecal matter from the intestine, which can lead to infection and inflammation. Regardless, when the appendix becomes inflamed, it fills with pus and may burst, which will lead to infection of the abdominal cavity.Learning to identify and recognize the symptoms of appendicitis enables prompt treatment and helps prevent complications, such as peritonitis or bowel obstructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Pay immediate attention to any pain that originates close to the navel, then extends toward the right lower portion of the abdomen. The symptoms may start with a mild sensation of sharp, jabbing pains, or a general throbbing, but will worsen and become persistent. Watch for pain that increases with breathing, moving, coughing or other activities.

    • 2

Be vigilant for growing sensations of nausea or vomiting. Different individuals may experience one or the other, or sometimes even both.

    • 3

Take your temperature. Often, infection causes an increase in temperature. That rise may be low-grade, but as the infection increases, your temperature may exceed 101 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Watch for abdominal swelling, which indicates the later stages of appendicitis. This swelling may be tender or firm, and will produce pain upon touching.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be aware of any changes in sensation or pain in the abdomen, and don't take chances. A ruptured appendix is a serious condition that may lead to complications.

  • Avoid eating or drinking anything if you suspect you may have appendicitis. Treatment of a ruptured appendix will require surgery, which will require anesthesia.
