How to Build an Effective Classroom Management Plan

Part of the task of building an effective classroom plan consists of communicating rules and procedures in a manner that is easily understood by the students. In addition to motivating their students to learn, effective classroom managers teach and review procedures which they also back up with feasible consequences.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on four to five classroom rules and procedures that you can effectively carry out and are backed up by some consequence and/or school policy.

    • 2

Decide on classroom procedures. Classroom procedures include: how to behave during group work, how to participate in class, how to complete a worksheet, and how to do other classroom tasks. There should be procedures spelled out for everything so that your class will be running like clockwork.

    • 3

Teach and review your rules and procedures 90% of the time and teach content 10% on the very first day of school.

    • 4

Prepare a natural set of consequences.Natural consequences are responses to behavior that happen more spontaneously. For this, you need to get to know the students a bit more. Natural consequences include: how to react to a student who starts to panic during a test, what to say to a student who is interrupting the teacher during a lesson, and consequences for other situations.

    • 5

Prepare interesting and motivating lessons. Lessons that are either too challenging or too boring are a perfect recipe for discipline problems. Balance your plan with really engaging activities that will challenge and keep your students on their toes.

    • 6

Continue to review your classroom procedures all throughout the year. You should review, reteach and repeat them 90% and teach regularly 10% of the time. Gradually, the numbers will begin to even out if you do this consistently.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't punish your students by overworking them. Keep punishments within a range that are both feasible and effective.

  • Effective classroom managers are also flexible. Keep this in mind as you encounter classroom situations that you did not anticipate and decide how to deal with them.

  • Consistency is always the key to building an effective classroom management plan: avoid changing your consequences otherwise your students will try the limits and misbehave. Such is the human nature of students!
