How to Go Dogsledding in the Poconos

If you love the winter and are looking for a way to enjoy the outdoors during those frigid months, dog sledding is an exhilarating activity. Cold, crisp air running across your face as you lead your team of sled dogs into the beautiful evergreen forest, life doesn't get much better. Although it's not quite Alaska, if you know where to look, the Poconos make a great place to give dog sledding a try while remaining within an hour or two drive from major metropolitan areas like Philadelphia and New York/New Jersey.

Instructions

Convince some friends to join you; dog sledding is a rare, exciting experience that should be shared. Spouse, girlfriend, group of buddies--you'll need to subtly suggest the activity and convey images of mushing through the forest and enjoying backwoods' views that would otherwise be unreachable. If no one shares your enthusiasm, suggest that they come along simply to watch. The image of you potentially face-planting, time and time again, should get some bystanders. Besides, the Poconos offer a variety of other great amenities, including skiing, spas, romantic getaways and even casinos.

Book a stay at the Inn at Pocono Manor. A beautiful 3000-acre resort, the Inn offers Arctic Paws dog sledding tours. Arctic Paws offers a distinct experience in which the guest decides whether to ride along or take the reins and lead the team himself. For the adventurous, take the rare opportunity to experience leading a team of dogs along groomed trails. If you're not quite ready, just go along for the ride with a professional guide. Be sure to reserve your dog sledding in advance, as tours can book quickly.

Once you've arrived at the Inn, it's time to suit up and go. Depending on the weather, layer yourself with a thin, breathable base layer, fleece or sweaters for insulation, and a coat. Don't forget hats, gloves, scarves, etc. Remember you'll be out in the cold sledding through frosty winds, be sure to dress warmly enough; you can always take clothes off if too hot. Tours last for about an hour.

Meet your guide and pay close attention to all instructions. Dog sledding is an enjoyable activity, but it can be dangerous if you don't follow instructions. Once you've gotten all instructions, mush and savor the experience. Don't forget to snap some photos of yourself on the sled to show all your friends back home.

    • 5

Once you've finished dog sledding, it's time to relax and warm up. Head into town and enjoy a drink and a hot meal. You've earned it. The Poconos have a vast selection of dining options, so eat a hearty meal before heading back to the Inn. There are also plenty of nightlife options if you're not quite ready to retire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Discuss the temperament of individual dogs with your guide, prior to approaching. Although they are beautiful, sled dogs are trained animals, bred to work. They are not necessarily friendly or eager to be pet or played with.

  • Although, the Poconos offers a controlled environment, dog sledding is an inherently dangerous activity and should be treated accordingly.
