A rainstorm can quickly turn a fun camping trip into a soaking wet debacle. Even if you time your camping trip to coincide with nice weather, there's always the possibility that a storm will catch you off guard. By following a few rules of tent camping, you can increase your chances of staying dry even if you're caught in the rain.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tarp
  • Waterproof sleeping mat
  1. Step 1

Choose a spot with good drainage to pitch your tent. Look for signs of old puddles or rivulets and avoid these areas.

  2. Step 2

Place a tarp on the ground where you plan to pitch your tent.

  3. Step 3

Tuck the edges of the tarp underneath the tent.

  4. Step 4

Attach the tent fly to the top of the tent, which should help it shed water.

  5. Step 5

Place your waterproof sleeping mats in the center of the tent if you see a rainstorm approaching, or if you plan to leave your camp for several hours.

  6. Step 6

Pile all your bedding on top of the sleeping mats so it isn't touching the sides of the tent. This way, if water manages to run under the floor of the tent, your bedding will stay dry.

  7. Step 7

Leave everything in your vehicle that you don't absolutely need in the tent.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the tarp frequently to make sure no edges are peeking out from under the tent. If the tarp is exposed to rain, it will funnel the water under the tent and likely get your belongings wet.
  • Make sure nothing touches the sides of the tent, as this is the most common way for things inside the tent to get wet.
  • Newer tents tend to shed water more effectively, so if you find you are still getting wet following these steps, you may need to invest in a new tent.
  • If the rainstorm is accompanied by lightning, move from your tent into a vehicle or building for safety.
