How to Donate Reading Materials in NYC

Many people who live in New York City are aware of the numerous used book stores in the area. There are also several places where people can donate books and other reading materials that they are finished with. For most of these places, the donation process is nothing more than going to that particular location and dropping off the books, magazines or other materials that you wish to donate.

Instructions

    • 1

Donate to the Prisoners' Reading Encouragement Project. Reading materials donated to PREP go to local juvenile and adult prisons as well as other prisons throughout the state. Donations can be dropped off between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with the security guard at 145 Nassau Street in New York.

Donate to the Brooklyn or New York Public Libraries. These two are probably the most obvious choices when it comes to donating reading materials in New York City. Books (both hard cover and paperback), magazines and other reading materials in good condition are accepted at most branches. Contact the branch you wish to donate to in order to find out what it is that branch is looking for at that particular time.

Give your reading materials to the Used Book Cafe in SoHo. All of the profits from the bookstore go to a non-profit organization which provides housing as well as other services, including health care for HIV and AIDS patients. Only books can be donated. All donations are tax deductible. Log onto the Housing Works website for contact information as well as information regarding mail donations.

Donate your reading materials to New York City Books Through Bars. This works the same way as PREP, only all donations will be sent to prisons local to the NYC area. The organization asks that you only donate paperback books and that you shy away from certain genres, such as any and all religious books. Log onto the BTB website to learn more information regarding location and times for drop-offs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Local Hospitals are also always looking for these donations. Contact the hospital nearest to you to learn their donation policies.
