Make a Pompom

It is fun to go shopping in the fall for winter clothing. Bright colored hats and scarves are hanging up for everyone to see and buy. The noticeable hats are the ones with the big pompoms on the top. There is something nostalgic of our childhood sledding or tobogganing that just makes them inviting. The pompom is a simple addition to a hat, but it gives a big impact.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a two matching six-inch circles on a piece of cardboard. Draw a one and a half inch circle right in the middle of both of them. Cut them out with a pair of sharp scissors and then remove the center.

    • 2

Place the two circles together, one on top of the other. Wind the yarn of your choice around the circles from the inside to the outside. Wrap it around the whole circle many layers thick so that the center fills with layers of yarn.

    • 3

Cut the yarn at the outside edge by sliding the scissors between the two layers of cardboard. Carefully cut the yarn all the way around, making sure not to disturb the layers too much.

    • 4

Take a long piece of string and wrap it around the circle in between the two layers of cardboard. Make a simple tie and pull it tight. It will bring all the yarn together in the center. Make another tie to form a knot and tighten.

    • 5

Remove the cardboard from both sides and fluff the yarn into a ball shape. Use the long string used to tie the pompom together to crochet it to the top of your hat.

Tips & Warnings

  • The cardboard circles can be cut larger or smaller to make different size pompoms.

I will use this to spruce up the hats I crochet. The pompom cats sound adorable - my grandmother used to use them as the feet and ears and nose and tail on her crocheted poodles :)

Good idea to dress up hats. My mom used to make pompoms and stitch them together to make cute cats.
