The hook shot is the most unconventional shot in basketball. It has been called the unblockable shot because of its release motion. The hook shot has become very unpopular in the modern era of basketball, which makes it more dangerous during competition because no one expects it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Official NBA size basketball
  • 10-foot basketball goal
  1. Step 1

Stand at least 6 feet from the rim with no ball in hand and your back to the goal. You want to master the motion first. You can stand at any angle you choose as long as you are in front of the backboard.

  2. Step 2

Swing your body slowly 90 degrees toward the goal in the direction of your shooting hand. If you're right-handed, swing to the right; if you're left-handed swing to the left. Your body should end up squared and facing the goal. When your ear is facing the rim, push off of your inside leg to jump as high as you can.

  3. Step 3

Add this motion simultaneously while you are motioning toward the goal. Your shooting hand should be face-up and fully opened and extended with a slight bend in it, along the side of your body. From south to north, raise your shooting arm completely over your head, maintaining the extension with a slight curve in it. Your bicep should be at your ear with little space between, and your elbow should be at the top or above your head.

  4. Step 4

Flick your wrist upward to downward to create a crisp spin on the ball. Your hand and fingertips should be pointing directly at the goal in the end.

  5. Step 5

Add the ball to your hand to complete the shot. Prepare by holding your shooting arm straight out pointing east to west, at shoulder level. With the ball in your hand and your palm facing up, flick the ball with your fingers several times in the air, and catch it in the same hand. This exercise will build the muscles need to execute the hook shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your off hand to create space between you and your defender.
  • Don't shuffle your feet. Maintain your pivot foot unless you dribble.
