How to Become a Forensic Technologist

If you are a biology buff and enjoy puzzles and riddles, a career in forensic technology, spent in a laboratory researching and analysing samples of bodily fluids and tissues might be perfect for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a college degree. A Masters degree is preferable but it isn't unheard of to find work as a forensic scientist with only an associates degree, especially if you are still pursuing your education. Keep your education geared toward math, biology and chemistry until you actually begin career preparation.

    • 2

Gain work experience while in college. Look for jobs in a professor's lab or the city morgue. This work history can be used to fill out your resume later in life. Most people don't get those types of jobs right away. You may have to work your way up from chemistry lab assistant or a similar job.

    • 3

Choose a focus for your education. Colleges offer specialized classes to gear you up for your chosen profession. Various focuses may include crime scene examiner, forensic engineer and crime lab analyst, just to name a few. Complete any internships that may be required for a degree in forensic science.

    • 4

Graduate and get to work. Create a resume showcasing your education as well as your related work history and experience. Most forensic technologists work in the government, either at the local or state level. Search for government jobs with an online job bank. Also visit your local employment agency. They will be well acquainted with jobs in your area.

    • 5

Continue your education once you get a job. New and exciting discoveries in DNA and other fields keep this field constantly changing and evolving. Stay abreast of your field by taking classes and attending lectures and seminars.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your contacts. Stay in contact with that college professor and that mortician back home. They may be helpful to your career later.

  • Be sure that you have strong communication skills and are detail oriented. You will never make it in this field without those characteristics.
