Choose heels that are less than 3 inches. Although 6- to-8-inch heels may look attractive, they are usually a lot more painful. Higher heels put a lot more pressure on the sole of the foot, particularly near the toes. Make sure that the shoes are wide enough for your feet. One of the main reasons that heels often hurt is because women try to squeeze their feet into a shoe that is not wide enough. To prevent yourself from getting blisters on the sides of your feet, it is important to look for shoes that come in wide sizes if you need them.

Select shoes that have a thick, chunky heel. They offer much more support than thinner heels do, which means that you will be less likely to experience pain. Thicker heels are also known to be a lot less likely to break than thinner heels are, so you may be able to prevent yourself from experiencing some added frustration.

Look at the sole of the shoe before you purchase a pair of heels. Try to opt for heels which have a grainy appearance. Shoes with smooth soles do not offer as much traction, which means that you will be more likely to slide and fall. If you do choose a pair of shoes which do not offer traction, avoid wearing them when it is icy outside.

Walk around for several minutes in your shoes before purchasing them. There is no way to know for sure if a pair of heels will be comfortable until you walk in them. If the shoes feel painful after a few moments of walking around the shoe store in them, this is an indication that they are going to be very uncomfortable in the future.
