How to Make BitTorrent Downloading Faster

A BitTorrent is a file that you use on a certain program so you can download full movies, games, videos, applications and music. The most popular programs that can use a BitTorrent are UTorrent and LimeWire. Downloading from a BitTorrent can seem sluggish. However, you can make the process a bit faster with some methods.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Computer

    • 1

Purchase a broadband internet connection. Dial-up is the ultimate lag. Not only do you barely get 56k downloads, but the provider disconnects you throughout the day. A 100 GIG file could end up downloading for years. There are two major broadband internet connections: DSL and cable internet. DSL has a lower downloading stream than cable, but you have a private line. With cable, the download may be faster; however, you must share your cable internet with your neighborhood. Therefore, the cable download speeds may be even slower than DSL.

    • 2

Run adware, spyware and anti-virus programs. Sometimes virus and spyware run in the background-causing lag through your computer and the internet. You can download free protection from Download.com. Before you begin your BitTorrent download, run each of these programs so that you do not run into a sluggish connection.

    • 3

Close any programs running in the background that use the Internet. Also, close your browser and any games that are running on your Internet connection.

    Downloading Faster from UTorrent

    • 4

Bring up the UTorrent Program. This is located in your start menu programs.

    • 5

View the top of the program. You can choose from a few tabs. These include "File", "Options" and "Help". Click on the options tab. A list of options appears.

    • 6

Open the "Preferences" tab. Click on the "Bandwidth" tab. Change the "Maximum Upload Rate" to 1. The "Maximum Download Rate" should be 0, which is unlimited.

    • 7

Click on "Queuing". The "Maximum Number or Active Torrents" and "Maximum Number Of Active Downloads" should be set to 1. This will allow you only to download or upload one file at a time. If you download more than one file, your bandwidth is spread out between the files.

    Downloading Faster from LimeWire

    • 8

Bring up LimeWire from your start menu programs. This will take a few minutes to load.

    • 9

Look at the top of the LimeWire program. You will see several options. These include "File," "View," "Navigation," "Resources," "Tools," "Filters" and "Help." Click on "Tools."

    • 10

Click on "Sharing." First, look at the "Basic" tab. At the bottom of the page is a box called, "Download Sharing." If that box is checked, uncheck it. Next, go to the "Advance" tab. The "Torrent Sharing" and "Partial Files" boxes should both be unchecked.

    • 11

Click on the "Downloads" tab. Set the "Maximum Downloads" to 1. The "Download Bandwidth" bar is set all the way to the right. This will give you unlimited download speeds.

    • 12

Click on the "Uploads" tab. Open the "Basic" window. The "Upload Bandwidth" option is set all the way to the left. This will give a set bandwidth to anyone trying to download from your connection. Click on the "Slots" tab. The "Uploads Per Person" and "Max Upload Slots" is set to 0.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that everyone’s connection is different. If you are receiving a file that is downloading rather slowly, it could be because the peer on the other end is uploading too many files or their connection is not that great.
