In the state of Virginia, recovery agents and bounty hunters work alongside the circuit courts rather than the Department of Insurance. This means that if you plan on applying to become a bounty hunter in Virginia, you’ll need to apply directly to the circuit court.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Seek a license application from the circuit court in your county. Unlike other states where the process is regulated by the State Department of Insurance, in Virginia it’s regulated by the court system. You’ll need to first get an application from the circuit court in your area.

  2. Step 2

Fill out the application being as thorough and honest as you can. The application covers a number of areas such as your background, history and your employment and educational background. You’ll also need your social security number and current address.

  3. Step 3

Sign a document from the court allowing a background check to be done. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will complete the background check and include any information relating to criminal activities in your past. Those with a clean background are more likely to be approved.

  4. Step 4

Return the completed forms to the circuit court in your area, the same one where you received the application. You need to make sure that you’ve answered all the questions carefully and that your handwriting is legible. If there are any problems, they may return your application and ask you to fill it out again.

  5. Step 5

Wait for your application to be approved. Depending on how many applications the court has to go through, this process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don’t try to apprehend a criminal without first obtaining a recovery agent/bounty hunter license. You absolutely must have this license approved before working as a bounty hunter in the state of Virginia.
