How to Practice Good Gun Range Etiquette

It’s fun to spend a day at the gun range. Unless, of course, there’s someone there who isn’t practicing good gun range etiquette or the place has been left a mess. When either of those things happen, it takes some of the excitement out of the day. It isn’t hard to keep the gun range clean and use safe practices. Essentially, all you need to know is how to practice good gun range etiquette.

Follow all range rules. Whatever the rules are for the range you are using, go by them. It doesn’t matter if you agree with them or not, they are there for the safety of everyone. If you are going to use the range, you should do what they ask.

Pick up used shells if it’s range policy. Not every range requires that you pick used shells up off the ground, but if you go to one that does, you need to comply.

    • 3

Clean up after yourself. This one is so easy but seems to be a problem for people. Leaving bottles and targets lying on the ground when you are done shooting is unacceptable. It only takes a few minutes to pick your trash up and throw it away. Bring a bag in case the range doesn’t provide a trash can.

Practice gun safety. This is very important. Do not point your gun at anyone else. Always hold it pointing down and away from everyone else. Teach your children about gun safety before taking them to the range. It’s very important that they do not hurt themselves or anyone else.

Ask if it’s clear before shooting. You should always make sure everyone is back at the table or platform before shooting. It’s a simple matter of asking “all clear?” before taking the next shot. The other range users will either say yes or give you the thumb's up sign.

    • 6

Check that ear protection is in place. Along with making sure everyone is off the shooting range and back in place, you need to make sure the other shooters have their ear protection back on. Guns are loud. If a person doesn’t have ear protection, the loud sounds can cause damage. Be courteous and check before shooting.

Allow people time to place targets. People shoot at different levels and speeds. It’s nice to give everyone a chance to change targets regularly. If you see someone sitting without shooting for a while, it’s a good sign they want to put a new target up. Use that time to clean up and get ready for your next shot.

    • 8

Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Always keep an eye on other range users. If you see someone being dangerous, it’s best to leave. You can always come back another day.

    • 9

Use common sense. What it all boils down to is doing what you know is right. Keep the range clean, be kind and courteous to other shooters, and be safe. This will ensure a great day at the range.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never go out on the shooting range without making sure everyone knows you are changing your target.
