Volunteer at Dragon Con

Volunteering to work at Dragon Con is a great way to be a part of Atlanta’s biggest Labor Day weekend event. As a volunteer, you can even get free—or significantly discounted—admission to the multi-genre convention. Here are the steps to take to become a Dragon Con volunteer.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Dragon Con website and peruse the variety of teams and departments where you can volunteer. If you are unable to look up the information online, you can also attend a staff meeting in order to learn more about each department.

    • 2

Decide on which Dragon Con department or team you feel you will work best in, or the one that you think you would enjoy the most.

    • 3

Contact the section head for the department where you wish to volunteer. Contact information can be obtained at the official Dragon Con website, or speak to the person at one of the volunteer meetings.

    • 4

Fill out the required Volunteer Application Form, and mail, or fax it to the Dragon Con offices. Forms can also be filled out and turned in at pre-con staff meetings.

    • 5

If you hear back that you are on staff (if you’ve spoken with the directors and have been to a pre-con meeting, this should not be a surprise) speak with your section director to work out a schedule for the Con.

    • 6

Pick up your badge. Badges can be picked up starting on the Thursday prior to the convention at 2 p.m. If it is your first year volunteering at the Con, bring the $20 for your badge, if you haven't already paid for it at one of the staff meetings.

Work your scheduled shifts and enjoy Dragon Con!

Tips & Warnings

  • The earlier you apply to be a volunteer, the more likely you will get a spot in your first choice department.

  • If the section you wish to volunteer in has no openings, try registration, security, and tech services. These sections typically have openings when others do not.

  • Volunteers who are present at two pre-con staff meetings get a voucher at check in for a free Dragon Con t-shirt.

  • E-mailing the director of the specific section you want to work in can be more helpful in getting on staff than contacting the main volunteers director or the Dragon Con staff.

  • Working 25 hours earns the volunteer added benefits, including a spot on staff for the following year, and admission to the staff-only Dead Dog party, a closing celebration for volunteers featuring free food and drinks at a nearby restaurant.

  • Don’t volunteer for Dragon Con if you don’t plan on working your shifts. Not only will this ruin your chances for ever volunteering at the con in the future (and cancel any free admission hopes you may have), it’s also unfair to other volunteers who will have to pick up your slack.

  • Be sure to have accommodations set. Dragon Con does not offer hotel rooms to volunteers and nobody likes a tired, cranky volunteer.
