Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bow
  • Chest guard
  • Arm guard
  • Finger sling
  • Finger tab
  • Arrows
  • Target
  • Arrow puller
  1. Step 1

Prepare target area. If you are practicing on your own, you will have to distance your target from your shooting area. Make a line to shoot from. Distances usually vary by gender and age.

  2. Step 2

Standing with the bow. Your stance is important. You will be sideways with one foot in front of the other (foot depends on which hand you hold your bow with). In an archery competition, whistles will blow. You will have to stand at a designated line on the first whistle. Each blow has a meaning.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the bow. On a double whistle, take an arrow out and put the arrow onto the bow. The arrow will be placed on the arrow rest and pushing plunger. Pull the string back once you have your bow loaded.

  4. Step 4

Aim the bow to shoot. You should have your arrow and string pulled back, holding it. With a compound bow, the initial pull of the string is the hard part, holding it in place is easy. Look carefully and point your arrow at your target. On three consecutive whistles, you are now signaled to shoot. You have a certain amount of time to shoot, typically four minutes. When your time is up another whistle is blown. This tells you to stop shooting.

  5. Step 5

Check your target to see where your arrows hit. Pull your arrows using an arrow puller. When pulling, hold arrows at the end closest to target for easier removal. If you are shooting with someone else, take turns.
