Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which CLEP exam you are going to take. Visit the College Board website and choose from the 34 available CLEP exams.

  2. Step 2

Download the free CLEP Sampler. The College Board website provides a free demo whereby would be test takers can take sample CLEP exams to get a feel for what the exam is all about. It’s great practice for students who are not familiar with taking computer-based exams.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the CLEP Official Study Guide. Although the study guide is not free, it provides much needed information in the form of sample questions and answers for all 34 CLEP exams. It also provides preparation and exam taking tips.

  4. Step 4

Buy individual study guides if you're only taking one or two CLEP exams. The individual study guide, which is available in PDF format, contains information for specific exams where the CLEP Official Study Guide contains information for all exams.

  5. Step 5

Take an inventory of what you already know. Before you begin to prepare for a CLEP exam, access your current knowledge level. Try taking one of the sample tests without studying, so you can see your weak areas and the areas you need to spend a little extra preparation time on.

  6. Step 6

Determine when you want to take the CLEP exam. Setting a target date will help you to streamline your study habits. Continue to take sample tests until you feel you’re prepared enough to take the real test.
