How to Paint Fiberglass
Fiberglass is a very strong and light material, that hardens into plastic-like substance. It can be sanded to a very smooth surface using regular sand paper, and then primed and painted just like wood or metal. When painting fiberglass, use paint that works well with the material. Then create the smoothest finish possible using several different grits of sand paper, clean the surface and paint. This will give you the best results with fewer problems to contend with down the road.

1
Sand your fiberglass to a shiny finish using steadily increasing grits of sandpaper. Sand until satisfied with the feel of the surface, and remember, the more sanding you do the smoother it will be.
-
2
Clean your fiberglass with a mild soapy solution, or mineral spirts-not turpentine. Wash thoroughly then rinse with very clear water.

3
Choose your top coat paint and then get the matching primer base for this specific paint. Acrylic is your best choice for top coats.
-
4
Prime paint the door, and let dry, then sand if desired with a very fine 120+ grit sand paper. Be sure there is enough paint left for a primer coat.
-
5
Apply your top layer of paint. One or two thin coats is all that is needed. Use a roller or spray gun for the most even coats and the fastest delivery.

Tips & Warnings
Sanding with a orbital sander will make extremely fast work of your new project, however only sand to the thickness of your shell, and only if you need a really smooth finish.
Do not assemble fiberglass parts before the paint has cured. Brushing or rubbing of components can cause the paint to peel or crack.
