Choose a Bike Helmet

Whether you're a child or an adult, you need to wear a helmet when bicycling. Even a minor fall can cause a severe head injury. "Medical research shows that bike helmets can prevent 85 percent of cyclists' head injuries," says the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute. With so many helmets available and some with strange designs, how to you choose a bike helmet that is best for you?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the fit. A good fit should be level on the head, not pushed back. The helmet should touch all the way around and be comfortable but not snug. It should not move more than one inch if pushed in any direction, side to side and front to back. Look for straps that are wide and strong, but avoid straps that may block your vision. The fastener should be secure. When the helmet is strapped, it should be impossible to take off. You may have to try on different ones before finding the one that works for your head. Some helmets even have ponytail ports.

  2. Step 2

Look at the design. Avoid the "Aero" helmet because the tail could knock the helmet off in a fall. Look for a smooth shell. Avoid too many vents because there's less protection, but some vents are necessary for coolness. Look for large vents in the front of the helmet and a band for sweat control. Choose either white or a bright color that is noticeable.

  3. Step 3

Know the standards. Look for the CPSC sticker, which stands for the US Consumer Product Safety Commission or ANSI which stands for the American National Standards Institute, or the Snell Memorial Foundation.

  4. Step 4

Know the ratings. Consumer Reports' August 2007 ratings show that Bell Citi, Bell Slant, specialized Aurora adult helmets, and Bell Boomerang toddler helmet scored the highest for impact absorption. Bell Citi and Bell Slant adult models and Schwinn Intercept youth model were nominated for Consumer Reports' Best Buys.

  5. Step 5

Check out where to buy helmets. Helmets can be bought in Target and Walmart starting around $20. If you want someone knowledgeable to help you fit the helmet properly, check out the local bike stores and sport centers. Remember, you're never too old or too young to wear a bicycle helmet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always replace a helmet after an accident.
  • When purchasing a helmet for a child, be sure the helmet is comfortable or the child may not want to wear it.
