Beautiful fall leaf wreaths can be made from things you would ordinarily put out to the curb. These include fall leaves, vines, acorns, berries, pine cones and pine sprigs. Lengths of grapevines, pumpkin vines, or bean vines can make an attractive decorative base for leaf wreath designs. Follow the steps below to make your first leaf wreath from recycled materials.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vines, cardboard or coat hangers
  • Fall leaves
  • Natural decorations
  • Scrap crafting materials
  • Hot glue
  • Craft glue
  • Floral wire
  1. Step 1

Create the base of your fall leaf wreath. Cut three or four lengths of fresh vine from your yard. Twist the vine into a circle which is about 18 to 24 inches in diameter. Add more vine if necessary.

  2. Step 2

Twist some of the vine around the wreath base in a spiral to hold it together. Tuck any loose vine ends into gaps within the wreath base.

  3. Step 3

Hang the wreath base to dry. This is best done indoors where the weather will not affect the vines. However, if the weather is warm and dry, you can hang the base outdoors. Turn the wreath base every one or two days to keep it from becoming misshapen.

  4. Step 4

Gather leaves from your yard. Make sure the ones you select are not too dry or brittle. Collect leaves of several different colors such as red, yellow, green and brown. Attach the leaves to the wreath base either with hot glue or with floral wire.

  5. Step 5

Collect some decorations from the yard such as acorns, pinecones and berries. If you can't find enough material, check with your neighbors to see if they have things in their lawn or garden they were planning to throw out.

  6. Step 6

Decorate your fall leaf wreath on a theme. For example, create an acorn-themed leaf wreath by attaching oak leaves and acorn leaves to your wreath. Other ideas include apple wreaths, pumpkin wreaths or pinecone wreaths. Create turkey-themed wreaths by using old scraps of construction paper, cloth and ribbon. Use craft glue, hot glue, or floral wire to attach your decorations to the fall leaf wreath.

Tips & Warnings
  • For an easier fall leaf wreath project, cut out a large circle of corrugated cardboard to use as your wreath base.
  • If you have no vines, twist a coat hanger into a circle to use as a base.
