Many players get frustrated when playing poker, because they never know how much money they will have to contribute to a pot in order to see an opponent's cards and possibly win the pot. With KRG Poker that's not the case, every player knows how much money they have to pay into the pot at the beginning of the game. KRG Poker is in effect a very short version of a poker tournament. Each player pays a certain fixed amount at the beginning of the first hand, and pays no additional money during a game of KRG Poker. The first player to win three hands, wins the entire pot.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deck of playing cards
  • Poker chips
  • Poker table, or any other large table
  • Chairs
  • Snacks
  1. Step 1

Organize a home poker night to play KRG Poker. KRG Poker can be played in rotation with other poker variations, or can be played as the sole poker variation for the entire night. The minimum number of players for a game of KRG Poker is four players, and the maximum is seven players. The ideal number of players for KRG Poker is five or six players.

  2. Step 2

Deal six cards face down to each player. After each player has paid an ante into the pot, he or she may look at their own cards. In KRG Poker the ante is the only wagering, so it is recommended that the ante is two or three times the largest chip value in your home poker game. Inform each player that the first player to win three rounds of KRG Poker will win the entire pot.

  3. Step 3

Discard two cards and conduct the first wagering round. Each player must now discard two cards from his or her hand.

  4. Step 4

Deal three face up cards into the center of the table. These are the first three cards of five cards that will make up the community cards. Each player can make his or her best hand using any combination of his or her two hole cards and the five community cards at the end of the hand.

  5. Step 5

Discard one card and conduct the second wagering round. Each player discards another card from his or her own cards.

  6. Step 6

Deal the fourth community card, and instruct players to discard one more card from his or her hand. Each player will now have two cards in his or her hand. Let players know they will not have to discard any more cards.

  7. Step 7

Deal the fifth community card, and have each player reveal his or her cards and declare his or her best poker hand. The player with the best poker hand wins that round. Place a chip in front of the player that won that hand.

  8. Step 8

Determine if anyone has won the pot. Check to see if the winner of the hand has three chips, if he or she does that means he or she won three rounds and wins the entire pot. If no player has three chips, collect the cards and repeat the steps beginning with step two.

Tips & Warnings
  • The ante might seem a little high, but in reality it is very low. Keep in mind with five players a game of KRG Poker can last for over 10 rounds before a winner is determined. Think of KRG Poker as a miniature poker tournament.
  • On the other end of the spectrum, some might feel that the pot is too small for the large number of hands. If players complain, increase the ante to make it more worthwhile.
