Permanent makeup is makeup such as eyeliner or lipliner that is tattooed onto a person's face by a professional. It involves a similar system as traditional tattooing, however it must be performed with extreme care and caution. The application of permanent makeup must be done by a trained professional in order to reduce the risk of serious injury or bodily harm.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find an accredited cosmetology school that specializes in permanent makeup application. When looking for a good school to join, make sure the school has plenty of actual models for you to be able to practice your techniques on and not artificial materials such as animal skin or mannequins.

  2. Step 2

Enroll in an accredited school after you have done extensive research. Do not enroll in a school that requires a non-refundable deposit. If a school guarantees that you will receive a state license at the end of your training, request to have this guarantee in writing.

  3. Step 3

Research your state laws on cosmetology licenses and carefully review the guidelines for receiving one of these licenses. Don't take your school's word for it without doing your own research first.

  4. Step 4

Put in at least 10 to 20 hours of one-on-one training at the school. One-on-one training involves the student, the instructor and a human model. This type of training is the best way to learn the very challenging permanent makeup techniques, whereas group training gives the student less attention and instruction from the trainer.

  5. Step 5

Devote an equal amount of time learning how to apply permanent makeup on the lips, eyes and eyebrows. Make sure you understand the differences between tattooing makeup on sensitive lip skin, the delicate eye area and the bony brow area. Don't treat all areas as if they were the same type of facial surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Beware of schools that are quick to offer guarantees or charge non-refundable down payments.
  • Do not attempt to practice on volunteers who offer to be models in exchange for a cheap or free procedure. Do not perform procedures outside the classroom, and before you have completed your training.
