The cow killer ant or eastern velvet ant is actually a wasp and not an ant. It is always referred to as an ant, however, and moves and looks like an ant as well. This aggressive stinger is called a cow killer because it hurts so bad when you are stung by it. The cow killer ant is capable of causing severe allergic reactions in humans. Know that the cow killer ant is found primarily in the southeastern United States, though it is occasionally found in the north as well. The cow killer is found in woods, as well as grassy areas. They love flowers and can be found around flower beds.

Notice that the cow killer ant is generally 1 inch long. They are actually about the size of most wasps. This makes the cow killer stand out in size if you are comparing it to most ants.

I got stung by a COW ANT when I was 5 years old (I remember it to this day) as I was facinated by how furry and colorful it was...til I picked it up...OUCH! I've had wasp stings and these critters hurt worse! BEE CAREFUL and DON'T pet 'em no matter how interesting you think they are...

Kim, this is the kind of ants we have been seeing out here and is what probably stung Hailey last week. I just saw another one in the back yard. We got to get rid of them...sounds like they are pretty dangerous.

I live in between two cow pastures and see 5 to 6 of these a day. I have a 4 year old little boy who loves to run around bare foot. He leaves out of the house with shoes, but always manages to take them off somewhere along the way while playing. Does anyone know if there is a pesticide or a repellant for these scarey bugs?
