Gong meditation has been used for thousands of years to aid mental, physical, and spiritual healing, and for good reason—the sound of a gong is unique and powerful. When struck, a gong’s deep, echoing vibration penetrates your soul and your body, taking you into a deep meditative state. Though powerful by itself, a gong is even more so when combined with verbal chanting. In fact, using these two instruments together—the gong and your voice—can take you into the deepest state of meditation than you could ever imagine. This state is where miracles happen. Here is how to chant gong mantras.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small table
  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Stool or chair
  1. Step 1

Set your gong on a small table.

  2. Step 2

Set one white votive candle on each side of your gong. Lay an incense stick, in it’s holder, in front of the candles.

  3. Step 3

Light the candles and the incense.

  4. Step 4

Close the blinds and/or the drapes. Turn off all other lights.

  5. Step 5

Set a stool or small chair in front of the gong’s table.

  6. Step 6

Sit on the stool or chair. Close your eyes. Begin breathing slowly and deeply. Feel your body relax with each breath. Imagine your breath as a brilliant white light that is sucked up from the floor on each inhale, and distributed throughout your body on each exhale. Breathe in then breathe out rhythmically, seeing the white light being sucked up your legs, then swirling throughout your body.

  7. Step 7

Pick up the beater. With eyes still closed, strike the gong with the beater. Immediately upon striking the gong, say OM or Aum. Draw the sound out for the entire echo of the gong strike. As the sound of the gong gets lighter, make your voice lighter. Try to end your chant on the very end of the gong vibration, humming the “M” of OM or Aum with the ending vibration of the gong. With a little practice, you should be able to chant in time with the gong vibration. When there is complete silence again (your chant and the gong sound having died out) beat the gong again and chant OM or Aum.

  8. Step 8

Continue chanting in time with the gong for 20 minutes.
