While not as aesthetically pleasing as more-expensive options such as granite, plastic laminate countertops are easy to clean and maintain. There are different methods for cleaning a variety of stains, so use the one that best fits your needs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Clean lightly soiled plastic countertops with mild dish detergent, warm water and a damp sponge. Add a quarter-size dollop of detergent to the damp sponge, moisten it with a quick dip into running water and squeeze to create suds. Wipe dirt off the counter, then rinse the sponge with warm water and wipe the surface again to remove any lingering soap residue.

  2. Step 2

Utilize a commercial cleaner. A number of companies market all-purpose cleaners that are made to clean plastic counters. Spray the countertop with the cleaner and wipe with a clean, damp sponge or dry paper towel. Repeat if necessary to get rid of all grime.

  3. Step 3

Use a stronger cleaning solution to get rid of tough stains. Combine 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 2 teaspoons borax and 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap or detergent together with 2 cups hot water. Pour into a clean, empty spray bottle and apply to the plastic countertop. Let it sit for a few minutes if there are tough stains or a lot of grease, then wipe away with a damp sponge. Dry the counter with a towel or rag.

  4. Step 4

Mix together a paste of 3 tablespoons baking soda and 1/4 cup water. Apply the paste to stubborn stains on the plastic countertop, gently smoothing it over the affected area--but do not rub into the counter, as it could scratch the finish. Wait 10 minutes and remove the paste with a dampened soft rag. Rinse any residue from the surface with clean, warm water.

Tips & Warnings
  • When possible, use cutting boards and mats when preparing foods on the countertop. This keeps food from staining the plastic.
  • Read the labels on commercial cleaners to make sure you can use them on plastic countertops.
  • If bleach is an ingredient, be sure to test the counterop for colorfastness by spraying a small, inconspicuous spot.
