How to Stop a Dog From Running Away

Many dog owners become frustrated and scared when their dog runs away. They don’t understand why their canine would want to leave their home. But unlike humans, roaming is part of dogs' nature. Instructions

Consider neutering your male dog. It’s natural for a canine that isn’t neutered to escape to find a female dog. Getting your male dog neutered eliminates this urge for the majority of canines.

    • 2

Give your dog a daily walk. Some dogs escape the yard because they’re bored. Taking your canine for a daily walk will get rid of that excess energy. Plus, walking reduces the chance of obesity for dogs and humans alike. Without all of that pent-up energy, your dog will be too tired to jump the fence.

    • 3

Consider fencing your yard. If you have a dog that spends his time in the house or outside for short potty breaks, fencing can be a good option. Although it can be expensive to do this, your dog will have more free space to roam.

Understand why your dog is trying to escape. Some dogs escape because they’re afraid of something, a loud car, lawnmower or other loud noises. If this sounds like your dog, tape record the noise. Play back the noise at a very low volume and increase the volume over time. Once you work up to full volume, your dog should be more comfortable with the noise. If he seems scared, decrease the volume and work your way back up again.

Provide stimulation and attention to your canine. Purchase a few toys for your dog such as Kongs and balls. Filling a Kong with dog bones will stimulate your dog because he has to work to get the treat. Play ball with your dog to expend some of his energy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider implanting a chip. For a dog that runs away, implanting a chip is a good investment. This allows an animal shelter to identify your dog if he runs away. Your vet can complete this procedure for you.

  • Make sure your dog has an identification tag. It’s surprising how many dogs don’t wear proper identification. You can pick up a tag at your local pet store. Make sure to include your name, phone number and address. This will ensure that if your dog gets out, someone can assist in bringing him back.
