Think outside of the box. To have a truly special vacation and see all the state really has to offer, get off of the well-traveled Interstate 80. Take the scenic Lincoln Highway and enjoy charming little towns, rolling hills and wooded trails. In eastern Nebraska, check out horseback trail rides at Mahoney State Park, sip wine at Four Winds Vineyard, and enjoy a drive-through Wildlife Safari in Ashland. In central Nebraska, spend the day at the living history museum, Stuhr Museum in Grand Island. In Western Nebraska, enjoy camping, boating and fishing at Lake McConaughy, and visit Buffalo Bill Cody's home in North Platte.

Consider more extreme recreational activities. In Nebraska, you can enjoy rafting along the Niobrara River at a fraction of what it might cost in other states. The Niobrara River, located near Valentine in the Sandhills, offers breathtaking views of rugged cliffs and waterfalls, as well as up close and personal looks at beaver, kingfish and other wildlife at the Niobrara Wildlife Refuge. It's a world away from the flat drive along Interstate 80.

Explore vacation packages. Nebraska has a variety of themed vacations to offer. The predominant ones include tours geared toward history buffs and outdoor activities. Among the more interesting tours are mushroom hunting along the Missouri River, and tepee camping and horseback riding through the prairie for a week to experience life as the nomadic Lakota Sioux lived it.

Escape from the country to the city. Omaha is one of the most enjoyable cities in the country. The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and its Lied Jungle are among the best in the world. Check out Old Market, a charming series of shops and restaurants in the heart of downtown Omaha. Another growing area is the North Downtown Omaha district, with a series of cutting-edge businesses owned by young entrepreneurs, including the Slowdown, a bar and music venue that draws both up and coming artists and more established ones from around the world.
