Join a Baptist Church

Membership is not required in a Baptist church but many individuals decide that they want to become members. Asking for membership means that you are committing to be a part of the church and to minister within the church. Being a member is also required to vote in church business meetings and often to hold certain positions in the church such as a deacon. Know how to join a Baptist church in order to decide if this step is right for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend the church of your choice for at least several weeks and possibly several months or more. Make sure that this is a church that you want to commit to be a part of and where you plan to stay for the foreseeable future.

    • 2

Meet with the pastor or other church leadership to ask any questions you may have about the church and to learn more about the church’s ministries and passions. Make sure that your beliefs line up with the church and that you respect those in leadership.

    • 3

Inquire about how to join the church. Some Baptist churches have a membership class that you should take before joining while others do not have this requirement.

    • 4

Choose the Sunday that you wish to join the church. If your spouse is joining with you, then it should be a day that you are both able to be there. You may also wish to bring your children with you even if it means keeping them out of the nursery or their Sunday School classes for this part of the service.

    • 5

Walk to the front of the church during the invitation, which comes after the sermon. Approach one of the pastors or deacons who are standing at the front and explain that you would like to join the church.

    • 6

Answer questions about how you will join the church. Baptist churches accept members based on three criteria. First, you can transfer your membership from another Baptist church. Second, you can make a profession of Christian faith. Third, you can request to be baptized.

    • 7

Stand at the front of the church and be introduced to the congregation and then to be greeted by many of the members after the service.
