Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large glass hurricane
  • Red tissue paper
  • Orange tissue paper
  • Yellow tissue paper
  • Brown or black tissue paper
  • Leaf stencil
  • Scissors
  • Bowl
  • Paint brush
  • Craft glue
  1. Step 1
Many people use a stencil of a leaf to make the stained glass shapes appear more clearly.

Cut leaf shapes out of the brown or black tissue paper. You can use one or both colors. The candlelight will shine through the brown paper better, but the black paper will show the shapes of the leaves more clearly. You can use one shape or several, but make sure that they are clearly leaves and do not just look like long, brown strips of paper.

  2. Step 2

Mix the glue with water. The mixture should be half water and half glue, and should be easy to stir and spread around with the paintbrush.

  3. Step 3

Cut the red, orange and yellow tissue paper into small squares of about 1 square inch.

  4. Step 4
When you put the candle inside, the hurricane will light up like stained glass.

Stick the colored squares onto the hurricane. Do this by brushing a little bit of the glue mixture onto the glass and then laying the colored tissue paper on top of the glue. The paper should be as flat as possible and the pieces should overlap slightly. Continue until the entire hurricane is covered up to the very top. The top pieces should either be flush with the top of the glass, or fold over it slightly.

  5. Step 5

Lay the leaf shapes on top of the colored shapes. The double thickness and the darker colors will make them stand out. You will need to brush a little more glue on top of them in order to make sure that they lie smoothly against the brighter colored tissue paper.

  6. Step 6

Let the candle holder dry for at least 24 hours. If any of the tissue starts to peel up, stick it back down with more glue. You can use one or several of these to make a lovely centerpiece or fall decoration for a side or end table.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended and do not use candles around small children or pets that might knock them over.
